This is a subtle shimmering scarf in dusky blues purples and pinks. A light, floaty silk pongee 5 scarf, unusual enough for special occasions but handy and versatile for everyday wear too! I have hand dyed it in random blended bands of deep denim blue, lilac and pink with paler areas or even a little white in between. Works well as a large choker scarf, collar-filler ; even as a hatband, as you can see from the small scarf shown in the last image. This is a large scarf and more luxurious than the small one in the last photo.
It is a lightweight pure silk scarf 71″ by 17.75″ approx (180cm x 45cm), with a rolled-hem edge. I have hand-dyed it with steam-fix silk dyes then fixed them and washed and rinsed the scarf to remove excess dye. It is a good length for filling the neckline or collar of a jacket and light and cool for hot weather, yet warm for cooler days. It’s also very light and packs small so ideal for travel or sending as a gift abroad via airmail.
Hand dyeing and stamping is labour-intensive as it requires skill and multiple applications of dye to get the graduated colour effect you can see here. The price reflects this, and that like other members of the Essex Guild of Silk Painters, I work in small batches on my own. The price is set by agreement to support a fair payment to myself and other silk artisans in the UK especially those who are trying to make a living from their skills. Please support your local artisans by paying a fair price for any work you purchase on Etsy! These items are bought factory hemmed and painted/dyed by me.
Care: handwash cool using delicates detergent (a liquid one) or even better gentle shampoo (silk is a keratin-based protein like your hair!); you can dry clean it but never use bleach. Do not wring or tumble dry; blot with a towel then drape or lay flat and allow to dry away from strong sunlight. Can be warm ironed when wet or damp (two dots on the iron). To pack for travel, gently knot or roll it, tucking it inside something else to protect the silk.
Want one in a different colour combination? Please contact me- I can make these to order but will need a little time to get the right size and type if you want an unusual one. (Remember results are random so the exact appearance and colour cannot be guaranteed!) The last photo shows this scarf amongst others from the same batch.
Excess dye is washed out afterwards so the scarf should be reasonably dye-fast if you get it wet although this cannot be completely guaranteed. So handwash it seperately; and take care not to get it wet near light-coloured garments. Keep away from other solvents such as alcohols and cleaning products as these may damage or rot the silk. Random dyeing is exactly that, so each piece is completely unique even if I reuse similar colours. Variations in the dye come from the way it is made and these are part of the charm of this method.
