This original 19th century (or maybe very early 20th century) mourning veil or shawl is a beautiful remnant of an ancient use. Such a veil is always made of simple black hard crepe material. Double at the under edge. These kind of veils made special in Norwicht of this special silk crape. But they were worn everywere in Europe, so also in France or The Netherlands
The use of such a veil continues until the 1930s, so it is very hard to date exactly. The last image of 1876 and 1904shows how a woman could have worn it.
Condition:
The scarf is in good vintage condition, with only a few minor holes. The edge is very big, so it has some weight and it falls nicely.
Maybe this scarf has been in the closet for 120 years! And is still full original: nothing has changed!
Sizes: 115 x 150 cm. (ca. 45.3 x 58 inch.)
I do have 2 other mourning veils in my Etsy shop.
