HANDWOVEN, all organic cotton, naturally died with plant material.
This can be worn as a shawl, scarf, head wrap, belt or any way you choose!
The material is very soft and thin.
This clothing is made by Artesania Maya – an indigenous woman’s cooperative of weavers, composed of single mothers and widows with few economic resources from 35 families in the community of San Juan de La Laguna in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. They use organic cotton and natural dyes to weave handbags, scarves, and clothing. Not only does the cooperative give the women a better life, but also gives children in the community of San Juan la Laguna the opportunity to attend school.
The woman grow their own organic cotton, harvest the cotton, create the threads, die the cotton with natural materials, and hand weave each item on a traditional back strap loom. This is a very long and physically demanding process that takes anywhere from 1 month – 6 months to complete each piece.
